John practices domestic and foreign Intellectual Property Law with emphasis on patents relating to electronics, integrated circuit technology, video compression, and various mechanical technologies.
John first entered the practice of Intellectual Property Law in London, where he qualified as a patent agent before coming to the United States. He was admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 1975. He was subsequently admitted to the bars of New Jersey (1979), New York (1980) and Oregon (1984).
John is a past chair of the Oregon State Bar's Patent and Trademark Section.
Before joining CVMS, John practiced as a patent attorney with Smith-Hill and Bedell, P.C. and predecessor firms. Previously, John had served as a senior patent attorney with Tektronix, Inc.
Representative clients include Motorola Inc., Springsoft, Inc., Bioreaction Industries, LLC, Outotec Oyj and Wartsila Finland Oy.
John earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence (cum laude) from Fordham University School of Law, New York, New York, in 1979. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics (with honors) from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (United Kingdom) in 1967.
John's interests outside of work include travel, foreign language study, and competitive ballroom dance.
